No stopping Coventry as they thump Doncaster

- By DAVID LAWRENCE

COVENTRY followed up last week’s dazzling victory at league leaders Ealing with an impressive win in the cup, running in six tries to see off their Yorkshire visitors.

And coach James Scaysbrook admitted the players wanted to perform whatever the competition. He said: “You could see that they were a group of lads that haven’t had a great deal of game time together because we made quite a few changes and gave opportunities to some of the lads who hadn’t been playing so much. It took a little while to get going but I thought they came together well in the end.

“The good thing about this group is that they keep wanting to improve. The result last week [beating Ealing] was great but they just wanted to improve on that. There was some great rugby and to score 42 points is good for the fans who came down to watch it.

“The most important thing for the players is pulling on the club shirt and every time they do that they want to put in a performance, whatever the competition.”

Such an emphatic victory looked unlikely early on, particularly after Doncaster had chalked up the first points when prop Karl Garside dived in for a converted effort after five minutes.

But it was all square two minutes later when debutant full-back Tobi Wilson darted in and from then on there was no looking back for the Blue-and-Whites.

Scrum-half Will Lane steered the hosts into a 26th minute lead and as the pressure built, Doncaster dragged down a maul resulting in a penalty try eight minutes later, having back row Martin

Molina sin-binned in the process. Cov completed a scintillating spell with a fourth try before the break when centre Lucas Titherington nipped through a gap in the visitors’ defence.

The second half saw the visitors raise their game and were rewarded when hooker Will Holling was driven over but there was to be no fightback as a combination of good backs play and solid defending maintained Cov’s advantage.

Replacement front row Jake Bridges crashed over for the home side as they extended their lead and prop James Wayland became the second player to see yellow after another maul was grounded illegally.

The final score came with the final play of the game, replacement prop Toby Trinder crashing over from close range before Ewan Mitchell slotted over his fifth conversion of the game.
