Curry’s tipping Hull to bounce back

- ■ By BEN JAYCOCK ■

DESPITE being relegated back to National Two North, Hull captain Cam Curry stresses it’s not all doom and gloom at the Yorkshire club.

Curry, 31, made 16 appearances this season but is forced to watch on from the sidelines for the remainder of the campaign after suffering a broken wrist in the 50-0 defeat to Cinderford last month.

The second row was gutted to witness Hull’s best opportunity at a win this season go begging after Sam Morley’s 77th minute penalty broke Hull hearts in a crushing 27-26 loss last weekend.

He said: “It summed up our season. Like winning, losing becomes a bit of habit unfortunately. In the final minutes of the game, we think we’ve got it tied up and it can come back and bite you. Watching on the sidelines, only now have I noticed how good the standard of rugby is that we’re playing. Despite not picking up the results, the lads aren’t in too bad spirits because we know we’re playing some good rugby, but it’s not easy in this league.”

Being captain of a winless side destined for the drop is never easy, but Curry is pleased with his side’s performances, especially against the top teams.

He said: “It has been tough. Keeping the lads’ heads up is my biggest job. We spend a lot of time behind the sticks talking about why tries have been conceded. We’ve got nothing to lose in these next few games, so it’s about throwing the kitchen sink at every game and hitting the ground running next season when we return to National Two.

“A couple of top sides, Rams and Sale, said that we gave them one of the toughest games all season. Like most teams that come up, it’s the travel that has hurt us. We did Taunton and back in a day, which takes a lot of doing.

“Physicality hasn’t been an issue as we’ve always been a physical side and we will defend until the cows come home, but the biggest thing has been being able to turn defence into attack and that’s where the top sides get it right.”
