Pumas blow Cheetahs away to remain only unbeaten side

- ■ By BEN JAYCOCK

champions Pumas are the only unbeaten side remaining in the Currie Cup after their 66-21 demolition of the Cheetahs.

Jimmy Stonehouse’s men got off to a flying start and led 26-7 at the break. In all, the men from Mpumalanga ran in nine tries to the Cheetahs’ three, with Devon Williams getting three for the defending champions.

The Bulls lost 36-32 on Friday night against the Griffons to hand the hosts their first Premier Division win in the Currie Cup and their first victory over their opponents since 1997.

Tries from Sokuphumla Soso, Duan Pretorius, Jaco Willemse and Randy Fielies were enough to see seal a historic victory and see off a strong Bulls outfit featuring experienced lock Jacques du Plessis and URC campaigner Wandisile Simelane.

Defeat in the Northern Free State continues a winless start for head coach Edgar Marutlulle in his first campaign in charge and stretches the Pretoria union’s losing streak to nine in all competitions.

Marutlulle said: “We’re greatly disappointed. There were a lot of things that we could’ve, would’ve, should’ve done better. But we definitely didn’t do enough of it, and for us to be in this dogfight here was a making of our own mistakes.”

The Lions beat the Sharks 34-22 courtesy of tries from Tiaan Swanepoel and braces by Nico Steyn and Jaco Visagie.

In the late game last night, an incredible secDEFENDING ond half in which they scored 32 unanswered points saw Griquas secure an impressive 32-13 win over Western Province at Cape Town Stadium.

George Whitehead converted two and added a penalty as Griquas turned the game on its head in the second half with tries from Eddie Fouche, Reagan Oranje and Jay-Cee Nel.
