Hayes switches on the style for Titans
FLY-HALF Richard Hayes put in a stylish display, pulling the Rotherham strings behind a dominant forward pack as Titans got Tigers back for the defeat Clifton Lane earlier in the season.
The ever-present Hayes scored 15 points from the tee, putting himself atop the National 2 North scoring stats, while tighthead Dan Rylance had a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’, scoring two tries but also being sinbinned.
Rotherham’s forwards physical advantage showed, and from a scrum the ball whipped wide for scrum-half Sam Veall to sprint over.
Tigers looked like they were going in at half-time blank but two Titans infringements saw Mark Ireland score from the tee.
Rotherham took it up a notch after the break, a few phases from a lineout and blindside Theo Nwoshu-Hope crashed over to score. Hayes converted, and scored two penalties over the next 10 minutes.
Rylance was sinbinned for a spear tackle on Joe Fitzsimons, and player-coach Jamie Broadley scored a 30-metre line-dash, but it was a false dawn.
Rylance scored off another driving maul from a short lineout, and a Tigers lineout in Titans’ 22-metre area was intercepted for lock Matt Challinor who sprinted 60 metres to complete Rotherham’s sixth win in a row.
