Big two will meet in Cup final
BARGOED and Ystrad Rhondda will contest this season’s WRU Championship Cup final at the Principality Stadium next month after both came through their semi-final showdowns yesterday.
Last season’s beaten finalists Ystrad Rhondda have given themselves the opportunity to go one better after seeing off Narberth 26-21 at Dunvant RFC.
Outside centre Cavan Davies scored twice with No.8 Kelly Jones and wing Alex Webber also dotting down for Ystrad Rhondda.
Outside-half Rhys Truelove added three conversions.
The defeat for Championship West leaders Narberth ended their 100 per cent winning record in league and cup this season.
Ystrad’s reward is a meeting with Championship East counterparts Bargoed in the final at the home of Welsh rugby on April 7.
That is after Bargoed proved too strong for Bedwas in their semifinal at Newbridge RFC, running out 34-8 victors. Dylan Williams was at the double, with further tries from AshIn ley Norton and Keegan Bale for Bargoed in the first half, with Josh Prosser converting Williams’s second try for a 22-3 half-time lead.
Norton bagged his second try after the break before a Jordan Howells try, converted by Prosser, capped a fine win.
James Dixon kicked a penalty for Bedwas in the first half while Lloyd Wilkins scored a try in the second.
Bargoed are bidding to go one better than two seasons ago when they surrendered a 10-point half-time lead and were edged out 16-13 by Neath in the Championship Cup final.
Championship West, Llangennech moved to within three points of leaders Narberth – who have two games in hand – with a 27-21 win at Bonymaen. Luke Davies, Harrison Button, Ryan Morgans and Willis Wood got Llangennech’s tries with Steff Marshall kicking two conversions and a penalty.
Brecon defeated Dunvant 29-0 thanks to tries from Sam Jones, Jack Crockett, Sam Prosser and Jake Newman – who also kicked three conversions and a penalty.
Championship East leaders Cardiff Met beat Penallta 47-28.
