Backing for YCH merger
Scarborough Council has backed the merger of Yorkshire Coast Homes with a Teessidebased housing provider.
At its meeting on Monday the full council backed the proposal for the registered social landlord to join with Coast & Country.
Yorkshire Coast Homes (YCH) manages approximately 4,500 properties along the North Yorkshire Coast while Coast & Country has a current rental stock of more than 10,500 homes, the majority in Redcar and Cleveland.
The authority had to decide whether to back the merger that day as, due to a change in the law, it would lose its voting control of YCH when the change came into force the following day.
Cllr Vanda Inman (nongroup independent) called on members to delay a decision for further reports into the matter to be prepared. No other councillors supported her proposal.
Cllr Bill Chatt said: “The chief executives and chairmen of both groups came to scrutiny and answered questions for more than two hours, that was open to all councillors to attend.
“The information [on the merger] had been made available to anyone who wanted it.”
The motion was passed to support the proposed merger, which could happen in October, with only Cllr Inman voting against.
