BEFORE Mr F Baker (in the chair), Mr AH Robinson, the Rev TG Little, and Mr AM Daniel. TODAY, at the Borough Police Court, before Cllr Rowntree (in the chair), and other magistrate­s, Sarah Ann Fenwick Small, 52, William Street, was summoned for having used obscene language in William Street to the annoyance of passers-by.

Small said she was shouting, but she didn’t remember using bad language.

PC Moore gave evidence, and stated that he had failed to find out to whom the woman was using the language. A good many people were in the vicinity. The Clerk: Was her husband about? The Constable: No, she was absolutely on her own.

By the Chairman: There was no one immediatel­y near her. Although a good many people were looking out of their doors.

Defendant said she was very sorry. She was shouting, but she did not remember the language. Her grandmothe­r was dying, she said.

Asked as to why she used the language she said her husband had locked her out, and she was trying to get in.

The Constable said he did not see her trying to get in, but he heard windows being smashed. She had been before the court before, and the chairman (Cllr Rowntree) said the bench could not overlook a disturbanc­e in the streets like that, and she would be fined 10s 6d or 14 days. MOADIAH Johnson, 64, William Street, Scarboroug­h, pleaded guilty to begging at Seamer on Wednesday.

PC Mail said that prisoner came out of a house, and when questioned said he had been on business, and he was asked in to have a bite.

Prisoner said that was true. He had gone for a walk, and “he found that hunger was a very sharp thorn.” He was not able to do any heavy work through illness.

He was committed to one day’s imprisonme­nt. SAMUEL Burnett, farmer, was fined 10s, and costs for having been drunk and disorderly on the 10th inst. He created a disturbanc­e at midnight. THOMAS Martindale, milk dealer, Wykeham, admitted leaving his horse and cart unattended for ten minutes, at Ayton, but stated that he was in the inn on business settling up the accounts.

He was fined 5d, and costs.
