Hosier escapes prison sentence

- 1912 COURT Compiled from the files

THOMAS Stanley Hopper (17), hosier, 156, Prospect Road, who was remanded in custody for a week on a charge of having stolen a quantity of goods, the property of his employer Mr Edgar Harvey Thomas Bunting, was again brought before the Scarborough magistrates this morning.

It will be remembered that at a previous hearing evidence was given to the effect that prisoner had been taking goods out of the shop and by co-operation with friends had disposed of them and divided the proceeds.

The magistrates on the bench were the Mayor (Mr TH Good), Alderman V Fowler, Mr AJ Tugwell, Cllr Hopwood, Cllr Chrimes, Alderman Rowntree, and Mr J Sinfield.

Mr Royle (jun), who appeared for prisoner, implored the bench not to make a gaolbird of this youth.

The Mayor: Have you anything to say about getting him away?

Mr Royle: Mr Harrison, of York, has interested himself in the prisoner’s welfare. He is a man of considerable standing in York.

The Mayor said: The magistrates have decided to bind you over for 12 months.

You must be very careful for you have been dealt with very leniently in consideration of your youth. If anything else comes against you you will be dealt with to the utmost penalty of the law. You are young and your life is before you, and let me press upon the importance of not repeating the offence. You may consider yourself fortunate in being dealt with as you have.

If you can get any of your friends to assist you to go to Canada and make a fresh start in life we advise you to do so. Have you any prospects? Prisoner: Yes, your worship. The Mayor: Will you promise to do better and not repeat this offence? Hopper: Yes, sir. He was bound over in a sum of £5 in his own recognisances for 12 months.
