Price can make quick progress up the rankings

espite spending most of Saturday waiting in a broken down work van with my colleague Martin Dowey, I can’t complain too much after taking in a top class boxing card at the Liverpool Olympia.

I did Tweet on the way to Liverpool that we’d be lucky to get there in one piece, possibly I tempted fate and it came back to bite me in the end.

Once we eventually got to the Olympia, the boxing was first class.

Scarborough’s cruiserweight prospect Danny Price was impressive in his comprehensive beating of durable Bulgarian Tayar Mehmed.

Having seen all three of Price’s prefessional outings to date and listening to the feedback and reviews he is getting from the top Sky Sports pundits, it’s clear that he has a bright future ahead of him.

Price has looked at ease in all three fights to date, never really being troubled too much at any stage.

But he is only really fighting for experience at the moment. Learning the professional game and making the transition from the amateur set-up, which is of course totally different.

To have people like formerworld Champions Johnny Nelson and Glenn Mccrory singing Danny’s praises can only be a good thing.

Both Nelson and Mccrory know the sport inside out, and the latter has predicted that Price will be the stand-out name in the cruiserweight division in years to come.

And if you have a look through the cruiserweight rankings, at domestic, european and world level, there is an opportunity open to Danny to re-ignite Scarborough’s boxing spark, something that has been sadly missing since the unfortunate injuries suffered by local favourite Paul Ingle.

Price has already leapt up to 17th in the domestic cruiserweight rankings, and will no doubt harbour ambitions of trading blows with the likes of David Dolan, who he has previously sparred with, Jon-lewis Dickinson, Matty Askin, Leon Williams and Ola Afolabi.

Price, who isn’t short on self confidence, already believes he could beat the best in the domestic rankings, and judging by his reviews to date, he can’t be too far off.

Styles make fights is a term used a lot in boxing, but having an accurate and stinging jab in your armoury is more often than not the key to winning any boxing match.

Price’s jab is both of the above and seasoned commentator Jimwatt was also impressed with his defence on Saturday.

Things are looking good for Price’s future. If we can get the van fixed for his next fight on March 10, that would be a bonus.
