Pier’s penalty woe

-

WEST PIER hung on for penalty shoot-out success in their Senior Cup thriller against Hunmanby Hornets.

Paddy Parke’s Pier hadn’t touched the ball when Hunmanby grabbed the initiative through a neat Tom Rees finish.

Cameron Dobson almost made it 2-0 to the village side, but he was denied by keeper Scott Wardman.

Instead it was Pier who seized the game by the scruff of the neck, bagging two goals by the interval through a Martin Cooper header and a Paul Provins finish..

Hunmanby once again turned the game on its head, as goals from Dobson and Rees made it 3-2, but Pier hit back when Josh Clayton tapped home.

Hunmanby player-boss Dan Baldry looked to have put his side on the path to the next round when he scored from 30 yards, but Luke Midgley netted for Pier late on to take the game into extra-time.

Both teams held firm in extra time to take the game to penalties.

Hunmanby were on the back foot from the start of the shoot-out, as Dobson fell over and his effort skewed against the post, then Ryan Baldry’s kick was saved. Pier kept their heads and Sam Smart stepped up to smash in the final penalty to wrap up the win.

Staxton suffered a shock exit from the competition as they went down 6-2 to second division outfit Seamer.

The first division leaders were stunned by James Prethero’s men, despite two goals from front man Chris Dove.

Seamer were 3-1 up at the break and then fell further behind to 6-1 in the second half, before a wind assisted effort from Dove ended the contest at 6-2.

Trafalgar boss Liam Salt led by example as his team eased to a 6-0 win against Strongwood.

Salt struck a treble as Traf took control, with the other goals coming from Danny Price, Baz Gill and Liam Cooper.

Salt and midfielder Dean Craig were the stars of the show.

Newlands also progressed with a 2-0 win against Star.

Billy Logan scored with the last kick of the first half and Eric Hall matched that in the dying embers of the second period to make sure of the win.

Jack Hakings and Logan starred for Newlands, while Kile Fields and veteran Neil Clarkson impressed for Star.

Paul Brady netted a hat-trick as second division Victoria dumped division one Klosters out by a 5-3 scoreline.

Liam Vasey’s cross was deflected past Victoria goalkeeper Rich Curtis to give Klosters the lead after 25 minutes.

Victoria came back strongly and went into half-time 2-1 ahead thanks to strikes from Brady and Mike Anderson.

Nick Ellis’ header extended the visitors lead after an hour before Klosters were awarded a penalty, but Carl Townley’s effort came back off the post.

Klosters did get a second goal soon after when Danny Gregory crossed for Liam Vasey to score from close-range.

However, Brady completed his hat-trick with two cool finishes to put Billy Johnson’s men 5-2 up with 10 minutes remaining.

A clever lob from Vasey with five minutes to go made it 5-3, but it was a mere consolation goal for the hosts.

Fylingdales eased into the quarter-finals of the Senior Cup with a 5-0 success at second division rivals FC Filey.

Defender Tommy Gray, a recent addition to the Fylingdales squad, got forward to open the scoring early on.

Sam Newton and Jake Faichney then netted to put the visitors in complete control at 3-0.

Jamie Agar netted just before half-time to all but end the game as a contest.

Filey fared better in the second period but were unable to get themselves on the scoresheet and a goal from Paddy Chandler rounded off the scoring.

Fylingdales midfielder Chris Shardlow was in great form for the victors and claimed the man of the match award.

Ayton were another side dumped out of the competition by a team from a lower division as they were beaten 6-3 by Trafalgar Reserves.

Ayton’s Dan Bywater was unlucky to be on the losing side as he netted a hat-trick, two of his goals putting Mark Plumpton’s men into a 2-0 lead.

But Alex Wray fired in a hattrick for John Wood’s Traf side, his first two levelling things up at the interval.

Wood made it 3-2 and goals from Wayne Shaw and Dave Bramley made it 5-2 before Wray got his third. Bywater netted a consolation.
