THE MISS Scarborough competition is going strong with a total of 15 now in the running for the town’s title - but girls there are still places left, so get your entries in.

2011 winner Leanne Wilford of Malton will be passing on her crown at a glittering ceremony taking place at the Scarborough Fair Collection Ballroom at the Flower of May, Lebberston, on April 21.

Young women, aged 17-24, who have a YO postcode are invited to enter with a chance of not only becoming the new Miss Scarborough, but also going on to represent the town at the Miss England Grand Final in June.

The winner gains automatic entry to the national final while one other entrant will go through to the semi-final.

Looking to do the town proud are Abbie Johnson, 21, of Broom Walk - an English Literature and Culture student at Hull University, Scarborough Campus - and Scarborough Sixth Form College student Bethany Hedgecock, 17, of Beacon Road.

New entrants also include Zoe Henderson, 18, of Market Weighton and Ladbrokes cashier Stephanie Atha, 21, of Malton.

They will be joined in the audition stage, on March 18 at the Crown Hotel, by Hannah Buffam and Jessica Lane, 17, of York; Natalie Simmons, 18, and sister Lauren, 17, of Thirsk; Jo-ann Clark, 17, and older sister Sarah, 19, from Filey; University of Hull, Scarborough Campus Environmental Science student Eleanor Hardie, 19; Beth Carpenter, 18, of Normanby; York student Rebecca Nichol, 21; Jade Sorbie, 20, from Rawcliffe, and Alice Taylor, 18, of Skipsea.

Competition organiser Diane Yalezo hopes that more girls will take advantage of the opportunity.

She said: “The winner of Miss Scarborough and District must be beautiful not only on the outside but on the inside too, as over the 12 months of her reign she acts as an ambassador for the whole region.”

Mrs Yalezo has also appealed to local businesses to support the event.

She added: “My dear friend Vivienne Lee brought the pageant back in 2008 after a 30 year break, but she tragically died.

“In 2010 I was approached to keep the flag flying for Scarborough and worked hard to stage the event. I strongly feel Scarborough and District should have a girl in Miss England, so this is why I am organising the event again.

“Unfortunately we have still been unable to secure a main sponsor, so I am appealing to businesses in the area to ask for a cash donation, however small, towards staging this event.

“It is very important that we keep this contest going by putting Scarborough on the map.”

If your company would like to give a cash donation towards sponsorship or a prize contact Diane Yalezo on 07928564324.

As well as automatic entry to the Miss England finals, this year’s winner will receive a host of prizes from local businesses.

To enter, simply fill out the form on this page. Alternatively, email your name, address, date of birth and phone number with photos to su-ann.chow@ yrnltd.co.uk, no later than March 10.
