Warning on bed salesman

-

A BOROUGH councillor has issued a warning to people in Filey after he was cornered by an unscrupulous salesman.

Cllr Sam Cross said he was approached in Filey town centre recently by a man trying to sell him a cut-price bed.

Cllr Cross said: “I was approached by a guy in Filey offering to sell me a bed.

“The guy comes up to me saying, ‘look, I have to take it back to York if you don’t want it’, but I went, ‘that’s funny, as you have a Newcastle accent!”

Cllr Cross is convinced it was an opportunist, looking to flog poor-quality merchandise.

Several residents have also claimed that they’ve nearly been victim to what they believe to be a swindle, with some being offered furniture, such as beds, for as little as £20.

Trevor Ford, from North Yorkshire County Council Trading Standards, said he was familiar with incidents such as these, and has said urged people not to be fooled into thinking that they’re being offered a bargain.

“Quite a lot of these goods are imported from abroad, mainly in Europe.

“They don’t have to comply with the safety laws that products from this country have to, particularly when it comes to products that are flammable.

“You have to be very careful. My advice is just say no.”
