Worry at ‘glorified’ house plot

-

FOLLOWING the comments made by the residents of Knipe Point (Scarborough Evening News, Friday, February 17)

It saddens me, as a resident of Filey, to agree with their comments that the new development off Muston Road will be nothing more than a “glorified council estate.”

Filey Council should have fought to stop this over-sized development.

There is no need, and I haven’t seen any justification for over 300 new homes in Filey.

Especially ones built on greenfield sites. The building specifications have already been lowered from those originally approved.

One only has to check the estate agents to see that there are more than adequate numbers of properties for sale and for rent.

House prices already on the slide, will drop further following this glut of properties.

According to the developers presentation, the social housing, so welcomed by Filey Council, will be the last to be built.

All the visitors to the town that I have spoken with can’t believe that an estate of this size is being built.

So now we have to live with the problems this new development will bring:

l There have already been trees felled in Martins Ravine for the benefit of the contractors.

l The promenade is being damaged by contractors vehicles and plant.

l Businesses are suffering again.

l Martins Ravine, which has only recently been reconstructed at great expense, will no doubt end up looking like a patchwork quilt when the sewer has been laid.

l The surface water run-off must surely scour the beach by the outfall.

Reports are still awaited to prove that there will be no detrimental affect on the town’s drainage system.

Filey already has a high percentage of second homes, these do nothing for the community. Filey is becoming a ghost town in winter months, shops won’t be able to survive.

Finally one has to ask the question, why we have to pay for a town council that has no teeth. This development should never have been given approval.
