Scarborough leads the way

- Athletics

TWENTY-NINE members of Scarborough Athletic Club took part in the second race of the Club’s Winter Handicap series of races, which took place over a 4.2 mile course which started and finished at the Sea Life Centre, and included climbing the Castle Hill steps.

The handicap element of this event involved the runners forecasting their finishing times, and so there was a mass start, the runners then heading along Marine Drive towards the Customs House and the steps towards Scarborough Castle.

The first runner to arrive back at the Sea Life Centre was 15-year-old Bobby Scarborough, the youngest competitor in the race, which is only open to members aged 15 or older.

Bobby completed the course in 25 minutes and 31 seconds, which was a couple of minutes faster than he forecast, which earned him the maximum speed points towards the overall fastest in the series.

Chris Allen, who was the fastest at the first race in the series, was second to finish but is now the overall top fastest scorer. Ian Johnson also dropped down a place from runner-up in race one, but now lies second overall.

Rod Millard is third overall, and Bobby Scarborough, who did not compete in the opening race, achieved sufficient points to go fourth overall.

The first woman home was Sue Haslam, whose combined points after a fourth in the opening race, has placed her second overall behind Jane Hamp, whose consistent high scores with a second runner-up placing, has resulted in an overall lead. Suzanne Boyes finished up in third, but fourth-placed Lucy Harrison is now third overall.

The three top handicap points scorers who were the most accurate in their race time forecasts were respectively Chris Allen, Julie Clayton and Jane Hamp.

Chris Allen has taken the overall lead in the series, and Jane Hamp who has also achieved two good scores is a close up second overall.

In joint third are Ian Johnson who was the top scorer in the opening fixture, and Sam Shepherdson.
