Magicians set for Spa return
THE Northern Magic Circle returns to Scarborough for its annual magic convention this weekend.
Delegates will travel from all over the world to the convention, which will run for two days, starting tomorrow, to enjoy events, lectures and performances from some of the country’s top magicians.
An estimated 150 magicians attended last year’s event at the Spa.
A spokesman said: “The Northern Magic Circle 2012 Convention team work incredibly hard to bring you a modern and appealing convention each year. In fact, in recent years the team have brought you many ‘firsts’, all of whom have gone on to appear at other magic conventions after they have appeared at an Northern Magic Circle Convention.
“We all work hard finding acts which we hope to appeal to all, and although we can’t please all of the people all of the time we do try and provide events, lectures and performances which you will enjoy.
“The team have been working extremely hard to bring you a convention you can be proud of and to continue moving the convention forward. The convention is going to be billed as a Best of British with many award winning magicians taking part, all of whom are home grown.”
A talented young teenage magician will be trying to retain his title in the junior competition.
Sebastian Walton, 16, from Alwoodley, Leeds, will compete in the event at the Spa on Sunday, having won the competition last year.
Tomorrow’s Sooty and Friends is the first performance to which the public are invited. Joining Sooty, Sweep and Soo will be laughabout clowns Clivo and Jeani.
There will also be magic from Brian Sefton, laughs and surprises with professional children’s entertainer Doug Gregg and award winning puppetry from David Tomkins.
The ‘Best Of British’ takes place on the Saturday evening celebrating the Northern Magic Circle’s Diamond Jubilee year and will star some of the greatest names in UK Magic.
Acts include comedy magician Mark Shortland who has appeared on Penn and Teller, Fool Us on ITV1, Luke Jermay the renowned mentalist who has worked with Derren Brown and as a magical advisor to the recent ‘Magician Impossible’ series starring Dynamo, as well as Lee Thompson who is currently with the Cirque Du Soleil and has been performing his unique stage act for more than three years to London audiences.
High Jinx will be performing their illusion act in the gala show, while Ian Barradel will be performing in the close-up gala show and will also be presenting an informative lecture about the magic maker Tenyo.
