Invitation to join in Lyke Wyke Race
THE48TH annual Lykewakerace will be held on Saturday July 7.
The 42-mile running and walking event crosses the North York Moors National Park from Sheepwash, near Osmotherley, to the coast at Ravenscar and must be completed within 12 hours.
Most good ‘club runners’ complete the cross-country race in about seven hours, although the record for men is a little over four and a half hours, and for women is an hour longer.
The race, which attracts about 100 competitors each year, follows the route of the internationally known Lyke Wake Walk, one of the first long-distance challenge walks in the country.
Food and drink is supplied at seven check-points scattered across this moorland tract of North East England, and transport is available to evacuate retired or injured participants.
Each competitor to successfully complete the event will receive an engraved glass memento, and several trophies are awarded for winners, these include one for the oldest competitor, usually won by Donald Potter, of Loftusin-cleveland, this year he will be 79 years old. Last year Donald managed a 11 hours 21 minutes.
This year the trophies will be presented at the Raven Hall Hotel in Ravenscar by Scarborough and Whitby MP Robert Goodwill.
Application forms, and full details are now available, with a s.a.e. from the Race Director, Wits End, South Kilvington, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, YO7 2NF. Must be returned by noon on Saturday June 16.
