All smiles at Redcoat reunion as Butlins staff remember days gone by
Former Butlins staff who worked at the holiday camp in Filey had a Redcoat reunion at Scarborough’s Grand Hotel. People came from far and wide for the get-together, which also featured a trip to The Bay in Filey during the afternoon. The new development is on the site of the former Butlins camp, which closed its doors 30 years ago. The event was planned following the success of another reunion earlier this year, during which a plaque was unveiled at The Bay to commemorate Sir Billy Butlin. The reunions have been organised by Rocky Mason (pictured front, second from right), who joined the Filey camp as a boxing instructor in 1957. Mr Mason moved up to be- come chief Redcoat at Filey in 1959. After leaving the North Yorkshire coast in 1962, he was appointed as the deputy entertainments manager for the Minehead camp in Somerset. Mr Mason then took up managerial roles in Margate and Brighton, before spending a number of seasons in Skegness. He has been instrumental in setting up the reunion events alongside fellow Redcoat Dave Colwill. Picture by Neil Silk 134038
