Quality food to match the fantastic scenery

- BY BY KIERAN MURRAY OVERALL RATING

The harbour is very much the heart of Bridlington, so where better to sit down and enjoy the view for an evening meal?

Rags Restaurant is situated directly on the harbour edge with s t unning views of the working harbour and Bridlington’s South Beach and Bay.

We walked through the bar, which is a very homely and cosy area, and we were taken straight to our table.

We had booked ahead and were seated in the conservatory area next to the window where we were able to appreciate the beauty of Bridlington.

We were i nformed about the evening specials and that the deal for the day was golden battered cod with chunky chips and mushy peas for only £5. There are a number of different deals through the week and it looked a bargain after taking a sneak peek at the couple next to us.

For starters we decided to go with the dressed Bridlington crab which was served with mixed salad ,toasted breads and a pot of lemon mayonnaise for £6.95. Unfortunately following our order, we were informed that there was no crab remaini ng which was rather disappointing as i t was only early evening.

So alternatively we both picked the slowly oven roasted crispy belly pork. This came with creamed leeks and bacon, topped with crackling. The delicious creamy sauce with bacon really complimented the pork and left me wanting more. The presentation of the dish was marvellous as well and it was almost too good to tuck into. For the price of £4.95, we felt it was great value.

Among the other options for starters were a seafood platter (£6.95), homemade salmon fishcakes (£5.50) and a trio of bruschetta (£3.95).

The relaxing atmosphere made it a great place to sit back and enjoy the surroundings while waiting between courses. The choices of fish on the menu was great to see with the location of restaurant being a stone’s throw away from the sea.

There was a balance of seafood and meat with a few vegetarian options such as grilled butternut squash which sounded very tempting.

For the main course we decided to go for the fillet steak. This c a me with homemade onion rings, chunky chips and vine tomatoes with a peppercorn sauce on top.

We had the order of a rare and a medium cooked steak and both were cooked beautifully to perfection. The meat was so tender it was almost like putting a hot knife through butter.

The chips accompanied the dish in individual bowls, though one between us would have been sufficient.

Neither of us were able to finish our main courses and therefore, with great regret, missed out on a dessert.

Rags offers a high quality dining experience for reasonable prices. The location of the venue gives it an extra edge on its competitors.

I will almost certainly be returning to Rags for its attentive and friendly staff, excellent food and relaxing atmosphere.

The only thing I would change is that I would return during the summer months when I can imagine the restaurant is swarmed with visitors desperate to appreciate the harbour surroundings.
