WI meeting

-

There was a good attendance of members for the February meeting of Seamer and Irton Women’s Institute when president Edna Burton welcomed all present and also new member Wendy Sanderson. Jan Blower, treasurer, gave an update on finance. Thank-you cards were received from Barbara Kendall, who is leaving Seamer, and from Mollie Dobson for the card and flowers delivered when she had some time off with a knee replacement, but is now out and about again.

Anyone wishing to attend the Spring Council meeting at Scarborough Spa on March 25 will need to give their name as soon as possible to Edna or Enid Plevey. The speakers will be TV presenter Harry Gration and the ACWW world president Ruth Shanks. Jean Dixon will be the branch delegate.

Edna Burton reported that the committee has remained the same with the members keeping the same jobs as they had last year. Entry forms for the produce and handicraft show need to be submitted to Anne Chambers before March 6, and members were urged to try to enter something to gain points. The spring group meeting will be at Snainton Village hall on April 21 at 7.15pm, when official photographer of the Crown Jewels David Chalmers will be the speaker.

Bill Byford, a retired head teacher and a musician and song writer, gave an insight into a very different world for most, and this was reflected in the vote of thanks given by Elaine Dixon. Raffle winners were Elaine Dixon, Julie Stephenson, Wendy Sanderson and Sheena O’Connell. Jackie Powell won the competition for a limerick about school days.

At the next meeting, from 7.30pm on Wednesday March 18, there will be a presentation on the Macmillan Nurses, and the competition will be for a small flower arrangement. Edna Burton gave a Bible reading and accompanied hymn singing on the keyboard, and the Rev Kitching assisted with the chalice at Holy Communion. Prayers were led by the Rev Richard Firth, and Jean Bell and Lynn Cross were sidespersons. Enid Plevey served refreshments afterwards.

The Rev Liz Kitching also preached at the 11am communion service, which she also led. Jean Fiedler read and Jeff Fiedler led the intercessions and assisted with the chalice. Elizabeth Moreland and Julie Hall offered prayer ministry during communion.

Richard Fuller (guitar) led the sung worship with John Taylor (drums) and Luke Bland operated the computer. Wendy Haslam and Gwyneth Riley ran the Sunday Club, and Jean and Jeff Fiedler served coffee.

Morning prayers are held in the church 9-9.30am every day Tuesday to Saturday, and all are welcome. On Sunday there will be a 9.30am Holy Communion service and an 11am worship service with the Sunday Club. named after a Premier League football team.

Quiz master Alan Combes did a brilliant job setting the questions and keeping all in order. A hard working team of volunteers from Derwent Valley BRIDGE served an excellent pie and peas supper, and the group was grateful for the support given by BW and DJ Glaves and Sons Ltd, who supplied the pies.

The winning team was Liverpool, in second place Stoke City and third Arsenal. Members of the Liverpool team were presented with a cup and all the placed teams received small individual prizes and rosettes. The wooden spoon award, a beautiful hand turned wooden spoon, was won by Chelsea. The event raised £338, which will be used to ensure the group continues to provide a local community library and information service.
