Jenny Stainthorp­e presided over a beetle drive which was attended by 20 people. Jenny and Trisha Stephenson won with Joan Dobie and Ros Smith winning the booby prize. Refreshmen­ts were served by Janet Peckitt, Joan Dobie and Ros Smith.

Next week’s meeting on March 2 will be a talk by Stephen Boyes on ‘The Growth of Boyes Stores’. On March 23 the stall will have an Easter theme and the annual dinner will be on Monday April 20 at the golf club. from some local outlets and Whitby Museum.

The second DVD was a compilatio­n of old cine footage taken by the late Geoff Edmondson of trains running past his Staintonda­le farm, coastguard breeches buoy exercises, and the wreck of the cargo ship “Fred Everard” in 1965, on the rocks below Ravenscar. Other cine footage was taken by Reg Noble of Harwood Dale (kindly given to the group by Andy Noble) and shows the Staintonda­le Hunt meeting at various places, some snow scenes, the Flask Sports, and a local show.

This was followed by a short annual general meeting. The treasurer’s report was presented which showed a steady balance so that the modest membership subscripti­on can stay the same. The officers, Mike Lester, chairman, Jenny Bartlet, treasurer, and Val Russell, secretary, were all reelected en bloc. The chairman gave a summary of the past year, which included several excellent speakers and a successful exhibition at Raven Hall Hotel, about Raven Hall’s history as part of the Heritage Opens Days.

Next month’s meeting on Tuesday March 17, 7.30pm, at Staintonda­le Village Hall, will be a talk by Mike Lester about early English folksongs, including those collected from local singers Jack Beeforth of Fylingdale­s, and Robert Beadle of Stoupe Brow.
