Cliff in charge despite Hull success
After a postponement from the previous week due to a heavy frost, the East Riding & District of York Winter Golf Alliance held their latest meeting at York Golf Club.
The weather suited Hull Golf Club’s Carlo Ciullo (Scr) and partner Mark Rozenbroek (9), who shot a bogey free eight-under par round of 62 to claim the tankards.
Ciullo is an assistant pro at Kirk Ella and a regular on the PGA Europro Tour and it was he who provided the backbone for the winning partnership posting nine pars and two birdies, while Rozenbroek produced the fireworks contributing four nett birdies and a nett eagle.
With two scores already in the clubhouse at seven under par it looked as though the Hull pair would join them however Ciullo had other ideas.
A big drive down the last hole, a 383-yard par four, was followed by a wedge to four feet and with the putt duly canned the Kirk Ella duo were victors by a single shot consigning York’s Neil Ferguson (3) and David Spofforth (9) and Beverley’s assistant professional Michael Helyard (Scr) and partner Steve Armishaw (14) to the runners-up spot.
The York Alliance was round eight of this season’s Hull Daily Mail Championship Bowl and it saw North Cliff further consolidate their grip on the title race extending their lead by another five shots to 21.
Hull, thanks in the main to Ciullo and Rozenbroek, moved up to joint-second alongside holders Heworth, but given that there are only two rounds remaining it will take a major upset if North Cliff ’s title charge is to be derailed.
North Cliff pairs Andy Allcock and Alan Richardson and Fraser Kelley and Dave Ellard both finished in the prizes with scores of 65 and 66 respectively to keep them on course.
The South Cliff pairing of Gary Thirkell and Pete Braithwaite also played some excellent golf to finish on a very creditable total of 64 as did Nick Bristow and Chris Lupton from Ganton and Andy Holmes and Robin Cass of Kirkbymoorside, all three share fourth place.
