Moment and Puleston seal Robin Hood’s Bay win
Shannon and Garnett claim top spot in consolation event
Gloomy weather forecasts failed to deter 42 hardy crown green bowlers from travelling to Robin Hood’s Bay Bowling Club on Sunday to take part in a drawn pairs competition.
Despite the far from ideal conditions, there was some excellent play and more than one unexpected result.
At the quarter-finals stage Dave Moment (North Cliff ) and Gary Puleston ( Dukes Park) beat Ed McCormack and John Cooper (both North Cliff ), while K Brown and Phil Todd (Hunmanby) beat Dave Wicks (Eastfield) and Barry Watson (Borough) 21-10.
Winning through the other quarters were David Lowe ( Dukes Park ) and Alan Landers (Whitby), 21-6 against Kenny Wale (Whitby) and Mick Gates ( Borough), and Geoff Watson (Whitby) and Dave Muir ( Eastfield), 21-8 against Steve Freer and Sheila Pearce.
A bi g surprise came in the semi-finals when Lowe and Landers powered to a 21-8 success against Watson and Muir, while Moment and Pulest on beat Brown and Todd 21-15.
A cracking final kept spectators’ interest right to the end as Moment and Puleston gained a 21-20 victory over the formidable Lowe and Landers partnership.
Undaunted by early defeats in the main competition, 24 players then entered a tea- and- biscuits consolation event.
In the semis North Cliff ’s Ashley Douglas and Bay’s Tim Purcell beat John Hogarth and Stan Sleightholme (Robin Hood’s Bay) 21-9, while Steve Shannon and Graham Garnett (Doncaster) beat Jo Leeman (Whitby) and Barry Gosling (Borough) 21-16.
Shannon and Garnett won the final against Douglas and Purcell 21-7.
On Sunday the final qualifying event of the 201415 Champion of Champions season will be staged at North Cliff ’s Alexandra Gardens green, 9am start. The following Sunday North Cliff will stage the C of C play-offs.
On Saturday March 7 Eastfield BC will hold an open day, 2pm to 5pm, for anyone interested in taking up crown green bowling to get an insight into the game.
Equipment to try the sport will be provided free, but anyone wishing to take part is asked to wear flat soled shoes or trainers.
