Riponian success for Goodman

-

After missing the first round of the BTRDA Championship, Paul Street and Jim Goodman decided to race in the Riponian Rally instead.

Hunmanby- based co - driver Goodman said: “We were entered in his Mk2 Historic Escort with two litre BDG engine and were up against some strong competition namely one of the country’s top drivers Matthew Robinson, who was also the co sponsor of the event.

“Paul wanted to start steadily as we were trying some different tyres to what he had been using and we were only fifth fastest on the first stage in Wass.”

Goodman added : “We found out just how slippery it was on stage two in Coll ege Moor when we came out of a square right too wide, climbed the bank at an angle of 45 degrees and were lucky not to fall over but Paul kept the power on and we pulled out of it with fourth fastest.”

By stage three in Pry Rigg the duo were slowly improving with third fastest and third in class.

He added: “Stage four in Waterloo (through Duncombe Park ) was good (fourth fastest) and the notes were flowing nicely.

“With the car running faultlessly there was nothing to do at remote service immediately before the next stage in Riccal Dale.

“In Roppa we claimed second fastest, Boltby gave us a bit of a problem but we still had fourth fastest.

“After halfway we started to improve. nine seconds faster on Wass ( third fastest), five faster in College Moor (third fastest) but we dropped a second in Pry Rigg.

“In Waterloo we picked up a massive 15 seconds and were second fastest but we were eight slower in Riccal.

“At the start of Roppa 2 it was sleeting heavily and the snow was laying just a bit, signs of what was to come and half a mile into the stage we were on t wo i nches of fresh snow.

“We were 25 seconds slower, but this was understandable. So it was off to Boltby for the finale, this was our highlight of the day as despite being six seconds slower we took 19 seconds off Charlie Taylor and even beat Robinson to give us our only fastest time of the day.”

The duo’s reward was third place in the historic and eighth overall, which includes all the four-wheel drive cars.

Goodman said: “We collected a trophy for first in class, this bodes well for our next outing in two weeks on the Malcolm Wilson stages in the Lake District.”
