Does anybody care about helping Muston any more?
Latest plea for next generation to show ‘community spirit’ over council fears
Muston Parish Council could be run by councillors from as far away as Whitby, if nobody comes forward to represent the village.
Several ageing councillors have revealed they don’t plan on standing for election again come May, meaning the seve n- s t ro ng authority c oul d be thrown into turmoil - and forced to seek outside help.
It’s understood that if the council f all s beneath three members, a random assortment of borough councillors could be asked to steady the ship, albeit temporarily, until enough locals are co-opted on.
But with just one current councillor indicating they plan on running again, there are calls for villagers to show more “community spirit” – and to do their part for Muston.
“There just seems to be a lack of interest,” said chairman Jackie Town, who plans to step down herself.
“We are actively trying to get younger people onboard, but it’s always the same people
“We need younger fac-es, but how on earth we do that , I don’t know. This latest village crisis mirrors the plight of Muston In Bloom volunteers, who last week revealed they a rein desperate need of new blood among their ranks.
Currently, no new prospective candidates have put themselves forward to serve on the parish council ahead of the election.
As such the authority has begun it’s search to find suitable candidates, s ending a newsletter to every house in the parish in a bid to “prevent the demise of the council”.
But if nobody is found , councillors representing Mulgrave – on the outskirts of Whitby – could be parachuted in to oversee village affairs.
A parish council spokesperson added: “These councillors would obviously do their best but would not have the same personal interest in Muston as someone who lived in the parish and therefore the future of the village and its local services could suffer.”
