Filey parents could find it easier to take their children away on holiday, under proposals floated by the trust set to take over the town’s secondary school.

A review of term times has been floated by the Ebor Academy Trust, as part of an “eight-point action plan” for the struggling school.

The proposed te r m t i me changes would be implement- ed with the aim of trying to “ease holiday planning”.

The idea is part of a planned major revamp for the school, which will include the establishment being renamed Ebor Academy Filey when the Yorkbased trust takes over on June 1.

Other proposals include refresher courses for staff to “top up” their knowledge, in a bid to try to improve performance at the school, which was placed in special measures last year.

There will also be a transport review, with a new bus service to taxi Bempton pupils.

Parents won’t be forced to pay out for new uniform, with the trust promising to provide all pupils – including new starters – with a new blazer and tie.

“We want to send out a clear message that Filey School i s changing for the better and t here i s a l ot t o get exci t e d about,” Ebor’s director of education, Richard Ludlow, said.

“Changing the name is just the start of a process that will transform secondary education in Filey.

“We are ambitious for the school and its students.”

Several of the eight points have already been announced by the trust, ahead of its takeover.

These include an overhaul of the IT system, with £80,000 splashed out on state-of-the-art equipment and computers.

The l i brary i s al s o being refurbished, with the added investment of an “innovation centre” at the Muston Road site.

One parent told the Mercury: “Holidays have been a problem for a lot of the parents, so anything to make it easier for us would be appreciated.

“The fact they are looking at improving teaching is really reassuring too, as the Ofsted report highli ghted i t needs work.” Forget the spade and trowel, knitting needles and crochet hooks at the ready!

Staff at Filey Library will open the door for the public to make a variety of knitted and crocheted flowers in celebration of National Gardening Week.

Filey In Bloom volunteers are also celebrating National Gardening week at the library with a display and the launch of this year’s annual best kept garden competition.

The floral event will be held on Thursday April 16 between 1-3pm at Filey Library.

This i s a f ree drop- i n event running alongside the library’s regular knit and natter group.

Refreshments will be available during the afternoon from 50p.

A spokesperson said: “This event is part of a series of events held in the l i b r a r y i n pa r t n e r s h i p with the ladies at Bcarm and Crafty that are being held throughout the year, offering diverse activities from crafts, charity coffee mornings, children’s activities and family learning events.”
