He was inspired to take on a different type of challenge because of James’ bike racing connections.

John s ai d: “I have done quite a bit for CDH but I picked the air ambulance because I know one or two people that have done some work for them and it linked in quite well with what they do for bikers.

“I mentioned it to James at a family get-together and told him ‘I’d had an idea’.

“He was well up for it and we thought it would be nice to do something for them and it went from there.”

Since signing up for the challenge John and James, both from Hunmanby, have been in training for the walk.

John has done a couple of practice runs – in all weathers – with weighted back packs.

He has also done climbs up local inclines, including Oliver’s Mount in Scarborough where James is fast making a name for himself on the roadracing scene.

“Fo r m e the biggest challenge will be fatigue or the weather.”

To keep race fit, James, 23, regularly does running, offroad cycling and completed a Tough Mudder type challenge a fortnight ago.

John added: “He is confident he will be OK – and he is 20 years younger than me.

“But it will be nice to see some fantastic scenery and we are l ooking foreward to it.”
