Athletic hope that Seagull Trophy raises club’s profile
Sixteen j unior teams f rom around the area will be battl i ng i t out for glory i n the i naug ura l S ea g ul l Tro p hy competition run by Scarborough Athletic later this month.
The tournament is being staged at Hull University Scarborough Campus on Saturday March 28 for under-eights and under-nines.
The event is being run by Boro under-12s manager Sean Leighton and his players, and he is keen to help the club att ract a ‘ l ost generation’ of young footballers to his club.
Leighton said: “I think a lot of the younger generation from Scarborough don’t know that there is a football club as we do not have a presenc e in town any more, with the senior side playing in Bridlington.
“We h ave j u ni o r t e a ms from under-12s level upwards but the younger age-groups is where we have no teams, so this event for the under-eights and under-nines, will hopefully spread the word.
“Next year we are planning on expanding the tournament to include the under-10s and under-11s categories.”
The a c t i o n k i c k s o f f at 10am, with teams advised to be there at least 30 minutes before that time.
As well as the football action, there will be an English Schools FA Soccer Skills show, a bouncy castle, refreshments and hot food stalls.
The under- eights teams are Heslerton, Scholes Park Raiders, Scholes Park Tigers, West Pier, Thornton-le-Dale, Driffield Panthers, Old Malton and Whitby Fisherman’s.
