Making a right song and dance

A programme of music including blues, ska, jazz and samba takes to the stage at The Den, one of Scarboroug­h’s top music venues.

The regular programme of jam nights and great music from house band the Tom Townsend Blues Band will be supplement­ed by a new outfit from leading local sax player Dave Kemp, The Unkempt, and songs from three local choirs.

Dave Kemp is well known to audiences in Scarboroug­h and beyond, having played with bands ranging from local favourites Hamp’s Tramps to internatio­nal giants such as Chris Rea and Little Angels.

“We ’ r e re a l l y looking forward to playing at The Den,” said Dave. “The club is quickly buil di ng a rea l re putat i on for superb music in relaxed surroundin­gs.

“We’ll be playing some new songs that we’re planning to record soon – it’ll be chance for the audience to be in on the ground floor.”

Held at the Cask Inn, The Den has been described as a “great mix of music, people and atmosphere”.

Rooted in blues, but also exploring like-minded genres, regular house band the Tom Townsend Blues Band runs a programme of special guests, jam nights and featured acts in a relaxed setting. The band are Tom Townsend (guitar and vocals), Paul Tilley (drums), Mark Gordon (keyboards) and Nick Boyes (bass).

The Den programme until the end of April is:

March 1 9 – Th e To m To wn s e n d Bl u e s Ba n d : Cr e at or s o f Th e De n an d mainstays of the Scarboroug­h music scene.

March 26 – The Unkempt: Brand new venture from sax player Dave Kemp; The Unkempt promise f unk, j azz, fusion, samba, ska… and the indescriba­ble (£5 entry fee).

April 3 – The Tom Townsend Blues Band: rhythm and blues, funk and soul from a class act.

April 9 – Jam night with The Tom Townsend Blues Band: Everyone welcome – come and jam with the house band and each other. Guitar, bass, keyboards and drums available to use.

April 16 – th e To m Townsend Blues Band: The Den is proud to be home to this exciting quartet.

Apr il 2 6 – Choi r ni g ht: The rich harmonies of three f antastic l ocal choirs: The Stephen Joseph Funky Choir, Global Voices and the Stephen Joseph Theatre Youth Choir, all backed by the Tom Townsend Blues Band.

The Den is held at The Cask Inn, Cambridge Terrace, Scarboroug­h, each Thursday from 8pm. Entry t o house band and jam nights is free; there’s a small charge for some guest nights – £5 on March 26.
