Scarboro’ bowlers shine in county finals
Birds and Dickens make light of electrical failure to net glory
Despite an electrical failure at the Yorkshire County IBA Champions of Champions finals, Scarborough Indoor Bowling Club members put in bright performances to collect two titles. In the final of the county triples, father-and-son Adie and Jack Bird, together with Bob Dickens, won 16-14 after the allotted 18 ends against oponents from York IBC.
The finals were at the Yorkshire president’s club of Selby, but after Jack’s 2-0 win in the men’s under-25s singlesets final against Harrogate’s James Frith, there was an electrical blackout, and the finals had to be resumed at North Cave IBC.
The trio eventually returned to Scarborough after 12 hours of travel and play, but with the reward of two titles under their belts, and Adie said afterwards: “Life doesn’t get any better than that.”
The success in the county Champions of Champions men’s triples competition was the first achieved by Scarborough IBC members, which puts Adie and Bob alongside fellow Borough BC crown green member Jack as the only members ever to win a county CofC title.
Unfortunately Jack and Adie lost to a Hartlepool partnership in the intercounty final of the national father and son competition at Thornaby IBC, on Saturday.
Scarborough IBC ladies managed only one win in their Ladies North East League match against Hornsea, losing 73 shots to 90.
Pauline Veitch, Eileen Hornsey, Vicky Simpson and skip Sheila Worsley, at home, were level with their opponents 16- 16 after 15 ends, but held their nerve and snatched a 22-20 victory.
More misfortune came Scarborough’s way when, although they managed only one home win and one home draw in their County League division one match,
North Cave took the honours 77 shots to 61 thanks to a 28-9 success and two close away results.
Winning for Scarborough were Nathan Richards, Alex Richards, John Hall and skip Jack Bird 17-15 and John Yeadon, Jonnie Stanger, Billy Truefitt and skip Steve Taylor 18-17.
At North Cave, Stuart Stamford, Patrick Corbett, Alan Catterson and skip John Buckle drew 17-17, while the Bob Dickens- skipped rink went down 28-9.
All are invited to a free Come and Try Day at North Cliff Bowling Club from 10am on Saturday.
