Burger King has confirmed it is looking at opening a branch in the same Scarborough street as KFC, McDonald’s and Pizza Hut, and a number of cafes.

Fast food giant Burger King has confirmed it is looking at returning to Scarborough – by opening a branch in a street dubbed “fast food alley”.

The Scarborough News can exclusively reveal the American chain, famous for its trademark Whopper, is eyeing up a move to Huntriss Row.

If the move comes off, the firm will join KFC, McDonal d’s and Pizza Hut on the street.

“We t hought KFC was a step too far, but if Burger King come the street will be a mess,” said one trader, who didn’t want to give their name.

“I like Burger King, and it will undoubtedly be popular, but we just don’t need more fast food here.”

Burger King haven’t revealed which units they have earmarked as a location, but town centre sources say bosses have been to view Vivaz’s old site.

There are rumours the former night club, which closed this year, will be turned into a four-unit mini shopping centre al though no formal plans have been lodged with Scarborough Council.

Sources also claim chicken chain Nandos have been scouting up the site, although the firm has yet to comment over the claims.

Other available units on the street include spots at the revamped Salisbury Arcade, which is being given a facelift by The Goodall Group.

Those plans were recently passed by Scarborough Council.

Chamber of Trade Chairman Cllr Janet Jefferson said that if Burger King does return, it will have to avoid the same mistakes as KFC, which was temporarily shut over health and safety concerns.

But she added: “I can understand people’s concerns about another fast food restaurant.

“But they’ve obviously looked at the footfall of existing businesses and they are not a company that would go rushing into things lightly, and they obviously think that it’s a good trading area.

A Burger King spokesperson said: “Burger King can confirm it’s looking at Huntriss Row as a location for a potential restaurant and will provide additional information as it becomes available.”
