Hadden and Wilkinson snap up title at Whitby

Ian and Sue secure the honours in own-selected partners doubles event

An own-selected partners doubles round-robin competitio­n staged at Whitby Bowling Club, on Sunday, attracted 24 pairs and produced a surprise result.

The competitio­n started with play in eight groups with the winners progressin­g to the knock- out stages where, in the first round Geoff Watson ( Whitby) and David Lowe (Dukes Park) beat Sue and Billy Holdsworth (Dukes Park) 21-6 and Alan Landers and Les Mitchell (both Whitby) beat Rita and Tony Bland (Borough) 21-11.

Also winning through were Ian Hadden and Sue Wilkinson (both Borough), who beat Barry and Penny Gosling (also both Borough) 21-8, and Gary Puleston ( Dukes Park ) and Kevin Gates (Whitby), who beat Bob Walker (Borough) and Steve Dover (Whitby) 21-7.

Landers and Mitchell then beat Lowe and Watson 21-15 while Hadden and Wilkinson sunk Puleston and Gates 21-19.

Playing on their home turf, Landers and Mitchell were well fancied to win the final, but they were well beaten by Borough hot- shots Hadden and Wilkinson 21-18.

Whitby signing up day is Saturday from 10.30am, President Winnie Courts will roll out first Jack at 11.30am.

Everyone is welcome, and it is a chance for members to pay subs and al so those interested in giving bowls a try can come along.

On Sunday there will be a drawn pairs merit competitio­n at Eastfield BC, 9.30am start, and on Easter Sunday, April 5, a mixed-doubles merit competitio­n is being staged at Hunmanby BC, also 9.30am start.

Scarboroug­h and District CGBA league play for 2015 will start with fixtures in the Evening Singles League division two running on Mondays from Monday March 30 with division one getting under way on March 31.

In March, April and August matches start at 6.30pm and in May, June and July at 7pm.

Play i n both divisions of the Saturday League will start from 2pm on April 11, North Cliff ’s home fixtures starting at 2 . 3 0 p m to overcome parking restrictio­ns.

The Thursday Evening Doubles League gets under way f ro m Apr i l 23 , whi l e, with only eight teams in each division, the start of the Over-60s League is delayed until Wednesday May 20.

The May Festival, which attracts players from throughout Yorkshire’s crown green and indoor bowling territorie­s, will take place on the Alexandra Gardens greens and at the indoor bowls centre, from Sunday May 3 to Friday May 8.

As in previous years, there are prizes well worth winning, and entry forms are now available at the indoor centre.

There has been little action at the bowls centre this week due to the the annual members trip to Potters Holiday Resort in Norfolk following the completion of the spring leagues.
