Town’s win sets up tense title finale

-

Filey Town Reserves took a step closer to securing the Scarborough News Saturday League second division title with a 2-0 home win against

Whitby RFC. Whitby RFC, who secured promotion to the top flight several weeks ago, had the better of the first half of the division two game with a strong wind behind them, but f ail ed to put their chances away at Filey Town Reserves.

Lee Cappleman opened the scoring for Filey, the playermanager’s spot-kick was saved but he slotted in the rebound to give his side a crucial lead.

The win was confirmed by a Martyn Jenkinson header from a Tom Haxby corner.

Filey are now only three points behind leaders Whitby, who have now completed their fixtures, with three matches left to play against West Pier Reserves, FC Rosette and Newlands Reserves.

Town’s second string need only four points from a possi- ble nine to claim the championship.

The whole Town team played very well to earn victory in this crunch clash, with the defence in particular having a strong game.

Snainton’s relegation to division three was confirmed by FC Rosette super-sub Paul Scott’s last-gasp curling shot.

Alex Wray put the basement club in front after just five minutes, but he soon limped off with an injury.

Player-boss Leigh Watson levelled for the hosts direct from a corner, and with both sides going for a crucial win it was the Newby-based side who snatched the win with virtually the last kick of the game when Scott’s curling shot flew into the net off the post.

Man of the match for Snainton was Nathan Barber, while the Rosette defence of Dave Bates, Danny Thompson, Dean Byerley and James Moody shared their star man award.

Rosette now need to win their final four games of the season to stand any chance of staying up, but one win for

nearest rivals Athletico2B would kill off those hopes.

Newlands boosted their hopes of defending the division one title with a 16-0 home win against Hunmanby United.

Sean Exley hammered in six goals while Danny Jenkinson grabbed five for the hosts, Adam Stride and Jack Hakings also scoring two goals apiece for Park.

The other scorer for Newl a nds was 17- year-old sub Louis Mancrief, who fired in a penalty to mark his debut for the top-flight side.

Edgehill also stayed in the race for the league crown with a 4-0 win at Sleights.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Ricky Greening fired in from 20 yards after latching onto a through-ball from Gaz Hepples.

Greening lobbed in a second after a nother fine through-ball, this time supplied by Phil Warnett, to make it 2-0 at the interval.

On the hour mark Greening completed his hat- trick with a cracking half- volley from the edge of the penalty

area, fired back across the Sleights keeper and into the bottom corner of the net.

Sub Danny Collins completed the scoring with an 18-yard strike after an impressive run onto another ball over the top of the home defence.

Greening and Lloyd Henderson were the star men for the visitors.

West Pier’s title hopes were dented after they were held to a 1-1 home draw by third-placed Westover

Wasps in the latter’s final league game of the season.

James Seymour put Wasps a head with across which sailed over the Pier keeper’s head, but Ali Caw levelled before half-time for Pier.

Both sides went for the win after the break, but defences came out on top as the score remained at 1-1.

James Burrows was named as the Wasps man of the match, and Westover boss Jamie Heritage was delighted that his side had claimed their highest-ever points total in the first division.

Third division l eaders Seamer Sports Reserves

were forced to dig very deep for a 5-4 win at Westover

Wasps Reserves in a thrilling match.

Leroy Donaldson’s looping header put Wasps ahead early on, but Kris Tate levelled from the penalty spot after a home defender had handled in the area.

Kyle O’Toole’s powerful half-volley restored the lead for Wasps early in the second half, but then Seamer took a grip of the game, Connor Myerscough levelling and then setting up Tate to put Seamer ahead.

Tate’s excellent finish then made it 4-2 and Steve Smith’s gl ancing header l ooked t o have tied up the win for the visitors.

Wasps refused to lie down though and made it 5-3 with a far post header for Donaldson and then Neal Castleton’s 25-yard shot made it a nervy finale for Gary Dixon’s titlechasing side.

Myerscough was the star man for Seamer, while Mark Bean was the Wasps man of the match up front, after moving from his usual full-back position.

Second-placed Falsgrave

Athletic took a step closer to promotion with a 2-0 win at Sherburn.

Mikey Anderson put the visitors ahead when he kept his composure and rounded the Sherburn keeper in the f i rst half, and Mark Reddy sealed the win with a closerange finish after the interval.

Sean Hughes, playing in central midfield, and rightwinger Theo James sparkled for the victors.

A perfect hat- trick from Matty Bywater helped Ay

ton Reserves continue their revival with a 4-0 home win against basement club

Sleights Reserves.

Bywater opened the scoring with a header from close range after a Carl Grayson effort hit the crossbar, and a right- footed Bywater effort made it 2- 0 j ust after halftime.

Substitute Kieran Friett sealed the victory with a crosscum-shot that flew straight in and Bywater then completed his treble with a left- footed strike.

Bywater was named as man of the match in an excellent all-round display by the hosts.
