Couple to share own church tale
Warm welcome promised at church open day
A young couple will share the story of how they became members of a Ryedale church during an open day “Celebrating Church Life” this Saturday. It is hoped that by speaking to Tom and Roxy Olley, of Rillington, other young adults will be encouraged to join the congregation at St Michael’s Church in Malton’s Market Place.
Tom and Roxy found their place among the church “family” on Palm Sunday two years ago after visiting other churches around the district.
“As soon as walked in, we were made to feel welcome,” said Tom.
“Everyone was friendly, wanted to know about us and why we were there.
“From that day, there was a member of the congregation who took us under her wing and that was it.”
The couple, who are both in their late 20s, were later mar- ried at the church by Rev Peter Robinson and, since then, have been ever present, attending services, volunteering at coffee mornings and, in Tom’s case, even becoming a member of the Parochial Church Council.
“That was one of the attractions, there is always something going on outside of the Sunday morning service,” said Tom. “It is a very active church.
“And it has always been welcoming – from the very first day. The church is always open, there are times when I have half an hour at lunchtime where I will pop in for prayers or just to see who’s in and have a chat.”
The open day, which runs from 10am to 3pm, will feature examples of all the activities on offer at St Michael’s, including the Big Fish Club, displays and stalls.
There will also be short presentations about the church.
Roxy said: “It is open to anyone of any age, from any background and to anyone who is maybe a little curious about the church or who is considering coming back.”
Tom added: “We want to make people aware of what the church does now.
“It’s not strict, not bossy and isn’t doom and gloom.
“It’s friendly, relaxed and, to us, educational. The church is not just for older people, anyone can find faith fulfilling, even if you are young.”
