Dog owners are being warned to clean up after their pets after a spate of convictions for those flouting the law.

Following investigations by the Dog Warden Service at Scarborough Borough Council, two cases for dog fouling offences were dealt with at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court last month.

Both offenders failed to appear at court and the cases were proven in their absence.

Jake Smalley of Castle Road, was found guilty of two separate offences of being in charge of a dog and failing to pick up dog faeces in Royal Albert Park on November 24 and on Mulgrave Terrace on January 29 this year.

He was fined a total of £300 and ordered to pay costs of £240 with a victim surcharge of £20.

Elaine Bramley of Albert Street, was found guilty of an offence of being in charge of a dog and failing to pick up dog faeces in Clarence Gardens on November 27.

She was fined £100 and ordered to pay costs of £120 with a victim surcharge of £20.

Russell Camm, Scarborough Borough Council Dog Warden said: “We view dog fouling as one of our main priorities and will continue to not only proactively target problem areas, but also robustly enforce the legislation throughout the whole of the borough.

“It is clear that the majority of dog owners behave responsibly with their dogs, although there is an irresponsible minority that do not. We encourage people to report any incidents of dog fouling to us so that we can look to pursue the culprits and where possible, deal with them with the full power of the law.”

Incidents can be reported by calling 01723 232323.
