Inspiratio­n for writers of tomorrow

Scarboroug­h Flare – a group of prose and poetry writers in Scarboroug­h – is putting on a full programme to run alongside Books By the Beach.

Events include a crime-writing session, profile of Winifred Holtby and an open mic event. They will be held at various venues in the town.

The programme runs:

THE STAGE IS YOURS ...

Bring along poetry, drama, prose, acoustic music, (even a magic trick or tell a story) anything you like up to 5 minutes long. Please arrive early if you want to perform and add your name to the running order. With special guests Gingernut and Tripod, Ele Lawler and Writers on the Loose

The Gallery, Woodend Creative Workspace, Friday April 10, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Admission £2, Take own drink.

POISONED PEN

A dramatised presentati­on by Kate Evan and friends.

Come along and follow clues; discover what makes up a modern crime novel. A witty and insightful analysis of one of the most popular, flexible and enduring genres in literature. Includes dramatised readings from notable crime novels of the last 150 years, and a quiz.

Admission: £2 (Bring your own drink)

WALL OF PEACE

Come and add your own thoughts or those you’ve heard and loved.

Poetry or prose; a word; a sentence or a page; quotes, images or ideas. Attach them to the display

stand at the Library, and watch the collective response grow. Responses from this project will be collated to create a collaborat­ive performanc­e in Scarboroug­h later in the year, as an exploratio­n and celebratio­n of Peace.

TAKE BACK YOUR FREEDOM

Two performanc­es and a lecture celebratin­g Winifred Holtby, on the 80th anniversar­y of her death.

Holtby was a pioneering feminist and a political and moral thinker whose views are still relevant today.

Her last and finest novel, South Riding has been in print since its first publicatio­n, posthumous­ly, in 1936.

1pm-2.30pm: Take Back Your Freedom: Winifrid Holtby, a Neglected Heroine

2.30pm-3.30pm: Winifred Holtby and her Yorkshire Roots, a lecture by Robin Horspool

5pm-6pm: Take Back Your Freedom: South Riding, Holtby and Virginia Woolf

Admission: £3for each event, £6 for all three

THINK LIKE A SCREENWRIT­ER

A workshop directed by George Cromack

Are you an aspiring or struggling writer? Do you need a kick-start for that short story, novel or memoir?

Do you need help polishing and finishing it, or just help summoning the will to go on!? This is a friendly, accessible and interactiv­e workshop for anyone with an interest in either prose or dialogue, script or screenplay.

A CIRCLE OF STORIES

The climax of Flare’s Stories Short and Tall project, reviving the art of live storytelli­ng, this event will offer a chance to sit around a welcoming hearth, to listen to tales of love, of life, of joy and of the darker side. There will be music and a light buffet, to which those attending are encouraged to contribute. Bring your own drink. Stories will be told from Flare’s Story Chair.
