Filey Ladies report from Monday Club

-

President Margaret Hunter chaired the meeting and welcomed everyone, particularly a prospective new member. She pointed out the already busy monthly sales table where members have the opportunity to trade in unwanted goods and give a small percentage of profits to club funds.

Margaret then reminded members that the front window of Boots in the main street is filled with a displayed collection of 50 years’ worth of this club’s memorabilia to advertise its golden anniversary. The shop window remains open to accept any additional items or sentimental comments from past members who would like to take part.

David Baker was introduced to speak about his working life on the Coble Landing.

To Filonians and regular visitors, Baker’s Cafe suggests good, nourishing family food with a drink, the reliable and handy break from sea and beach play, but David revealed that his grandad started his working life in the same place, but by making and selling ice-cream, and passing on the skills to his son.

David went on to divulge the many changes he has witnessed, particularly the decline of the fishing industry to a small number of working boats, but remembers the individual fishing families, their common to Filey names and their stoicism in the face of bad weather and tragedy. He spoke with respect, humour and pathos of the support services, the joiners and engineers who maintained the cobles and the wives who skeined, waited and kept the home and children in order.

When he was thanked, he promised to donate his payment to Filey RNLI.

At the next meeting on October 19 at 7.45pm in the community centre, speaker Mick Atkin’s subject will be Dial-a-Ride.
