The spoken word
At the Brompton Spoken Word evening in the village hall last Saturday evening, 17 readers recited poetry and read their favourite prose passages to a packed house. A stage set had been created with a living room atmosphere and the hall was organised for the audience like a bistro, complete with candles on the tables.
The selection of ‘spoken words’ chosen, ranged from being serious or thought provoking to the highly comic and were interspersed with dialect pieces from West Yorkshire and the East Riding. Not one word that was spoken was dull and many were hilarious!
It was interesting to hear what had inspired people in their varied choices. All the readers were local and after their performance, re-joined the audience while the next speaker took their place at the front.
The evening was a huge success and, said one of the organisers Bob Muir, proved that you don’t have to stay in on a Saturday night to watch TV to be entertained when such talent is on your doorstep! This village is alive and kicking! Watch out for future events organised by Music and Entertainment Team (MET).
During the evening there was also an interlude of piano music and the evening was topped off with a very fine two-course supper and a raffle - and all this for £5!
