Harvest event

-

The was a good attendance for the annual harvest thanksgiving service at St Peter’s Church on Friday evening. The church was beautifully decorated with flowers and produce donated by ladies and members of St Peter’s. Reading the lesson was David Birdsall with Barbara Archer presenting the prayers. The organist was Elaine Dixon.

The service was conducted by reader Judith Dean who gave a very interesting address, recalling experiences in the harvest field and helping to load bales of straw, then riding back to the farm aloft on the loaded trailers as a young girl at her home village of East Ayton. As Judith impressed, the bountiful harvest was due to the seed having fallen on fertile ground, and the labours of the farmers and all involved in the production of our food.

As is now tradition, the service was followed by a picnic in a pew, and entertainment with a varied selection of music and songs by Robert Hartley. A subject of interest, continuing the theme of harvest, was a display of scarecrows made with artistic initiative and skill of Veronica Dickinson. The church was open again on Saturday for people to enjoy the display. The produce from the festival is to be donated to the Rainbow Centre.
