Thirty nine members braved the weather to attend a most entertaini­ng and enthusiast­ic talk by Steve Johnson on the North Bay Railway.

Originally council owned, the railway was opened in the early 1930s as part of the town’s developmen­t by Harry W Smith. It was one of the first of its kind and the only 20 inch gauge railway in the country. The engines Neptune and Triton, built in Leeds and based on the Flying Scotsman, cost £1,000 and £1,500 respective­ly.

Mr David Humphreys took over the railway, which had become rather run down, and has made every effort to bring it back to its original state. He has added the Glass House Café and shop, two enclosed coaches for all year running, the waterchute, boats and balls, the smallest pub in Yorkshire (the Boatman’s Tavern), Skytrail, Halloween specials,
