There is good news and not so good news regarding the fishing this winter at Rosedale Lake.

Regrettably, the Tri-Star Winter League, which was scheduled to begin on Sunday November 1, has been cancelled through lack of interest.

The Tri-Star Winter League started life as the McCain Winter League 25 years ago and was originally a teams of six competition.

This format proved a success for a good number of years and attracted teams from around North Yorkshire and for a few winters both banks of the River Ouse below Lendal Bridge in York was the main venue.

Later when Scarborough Mere AC held fishing rites on a stretch of the River Derwent the league fixtures were then staged at Kirkham before being brought nearer home to be fished as an Individuals League at Primrose Valley and Rosedale Lakes, where it was continued after I retired by Steve Smith of Tri-Star AC.

The good news, however, is that beginning in the first week in November, when Rosedale Lake is usually closed for the winter, the fishery will be open to pleasure anglers for four days a week from Wednesdays to Saturdays except over the festive season, as it will be closed from December 19 until January 6.

Day tickets will be available on the bank priced at £5, further details are available from Nigel Hargreaves on 890776.

At this time of year when the cooler conditions are beginning to adversely affect bite rates, a change in strategy is often called for and after trying various tactics, some with success and some without, Bill Newsome recorded a very creditable double victory last week.

He crowned his near-50lb win at Tuesday’s Westland AC league fixture on Folly Lake at Risby Park with a 39lb 4oz victory on Friday during Plaxton AC’s final match at Forest Lane Fishery near Alne.

His best endeavours were on Tuesday at Folly Lake, where he left his nearest rival trailing some 15lb in his wake after finally finding margin pole tactics were most productive while offering luncheon meat on the hook.

Potting in minimal helpings of micro pellets, hempseed and meat fragments helped to focus the fish while he banked an all carp net including specimens to 5lb. Result: 1.
