Pier sink Edgehill in District Cup clash
A strong second-half showing saw West Pier claim a 4-2 victory over first division rivals Edgehill in their District Cup showdown.
Wayne Aziz headed in a Jackson Jowett cross to put the home side in the ascendancy, but Pier were back on terms within five minutes through Neil Thomas.
The hosts missed a couple of good chances to re-take the lead before the interval and they were made to pay as Andy Spivey’s side took control in the second period.
Kris Tate nodded them into the lead before Neil Thomas’ second and an effort from his brother Gary gave them a 4-1 advantage.
Dave Bell rounded the Pier keeper and fired home to pull a goal back for Steve Clegg’s men after 85 minutes, but it proved to be too little too late.
A disappointed Clegg reflected: “We were the better side in the first half, but we missed a couple of chances at 1-1.
“Pier grew into the game after half-time and Gary Thomas began to run the midfield and they went on to win it.”
Seamer battled back from a goal down to beat Cayton Corinthians 3-2.
The visitors led at halftime courtesy of a Jake Sands header, but an own goal drew Seamer level.
Luke Delve’s lob put the home side in front, but Corinthians hit back through Jon Read to tie the scores at 2-2.
With just 10 minutes remaining, Danny Bradbury’s glancing header won the day for Paddy Parke’s side.
Reigning Saturday League champions Newlands Park suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to York League Premier Division outfit Brooklyn.
Park were 2-0 down before Dan Freer headed home to give them a glimmer of hope.
As the home side pushed forward in search of a leveller Brooklyn caught them on the counter-attack and grabbed a third goal to end the game as a contest.
Seamer Reserves beat Division Two rivals Duchess on penalties to seal their progress to the next roud of the Junior Cup.
After a goalless first half, Harry Thorpe handed Seamer the lead 10 minutes into the second period, but Wayne Chamberlain equalised in the 70th minute.
Stand-in goalkeeper Arran Wright, Jack Appleton, Marcus Mockridge, Jack Buck and Darren Eves all kept their nerve in the shoot-out and Duchess’ first four penaltytakers were also successful from 12 yards.
Chamberlain stepped up needing to score the visitors’ fifth spot-kick but blazed it over the bar and Duchess crashed out.
Cayton Corinthians Reserves were another side to exit the competition after a penalty shoot-out, following their 3-3 draw on the road at Beckett League side Rosedale.
Danny Wilson, Simon Stubbs and Jamie Whitelaw struck for Cayton in a game that they led 2-0 and 3-1 before they suffered spot-kick heartache.
Veteran striker Danny I’Anson rolled back the years to help Commercial to a 6-4 win over Sleights Reserves.
I’Anson netted a brace, as did Liam Jennings and Macauley Youngson, while Ryan Roe (2), Paddy McQuade and Marc Kipling notched for the Whitby side.
A Drew McCoubrey hattrick helped Newlands Reserves get the better of Old Malton Reserves by a 3-2 scoreline.
Park were 2-1 up at the break but needed a 40-yard screamer from in-form McCoubrey to win the game in the second half.

but it was not enough to see their side progress as Gillamoor left Whitby victorious after a 5-2 success.
Elsewhere in the competition, FC Rosette were beaten 7-1 at Ryedale Sports Club, while Falsgrave Athletic went down 3-0 at Lealholm and Snainton were hammered 8-0 by Brotton Railway Arms.
In the East Riding Junior Country Cup, Goal Sports suffered a 7-1 defeat at Dunnington Reserves despite a goal from Ed Burrows.
A depleted Filey Town 3rds side went down 9-1 at Wilberfoss and Liam Scott’s solitary strike was the only bright spot in Sherburn’s 141 home mauling at the hands of Malton & Norton.
