THE BIG VALUE PAPER YOU CAN TRUST
Skills boost at Spa
Thousands of future engineers have been getting up close with space-age technology at Scarborough Spa.
The annual Scarborough Engineering Week has been taking place this week with companies from home and abroad exhibiting their wares in a bid to secure the next generation of talent.
Schoolchildren from across Scarborough and Ryedale were invited down and two open nights were also held for the general public.
The Spa will again be open to the public tonight from 7pm.
Supporters of engineering week include science and technology promoter Maggie Philbin, the former presenter of Tomorrow’s World, who was due to speak at a dinner last night.
Work is due to begin on a new University Technology College on the Weaponness coach park site, which will help youngsters learn more about advanced engineering.
The event has been organised by Scarborough Business Ambassadors, NYBEP Ltd, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership, North Yorkshire County Council, The Spa and Scarborough Borough Council.
There was also a competition, backed by The Scarborough News, for children to design their own working robot. More than 200 children, aged from 7-19, entered. The winners were Joseph and Rowan Newill from Newby Primary School with their crab design Jitterbug.
Their enthusiasm for engineering shone through when their robots were presented to judges David Loxley and Harry Barnes and Emily Miller. Runner up was Alicia Griffiths from Cayton Primary School. Alicia completed all three robot kits to a very high standard. Both were awarded Scarborough Engineering Week Trophies with the winners receiving a voucher for a meal for four at Tricolos.
