No action on Jaconelli ‘indecent assault’
Prosecutors advised police not to take action against a former Scarborough mayor in 1972 after being passed a file about an alleged indecent assault.
Peter Jaconelli, who would be facing allegations of child sex abuse if he were still alive, was alleged to have indecently assaulted a Spanish man more than four decades ago, according to North Yorkshire Police.
But i t has emerged that the predecessor to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), the Department of Public Prosecutions, advised that no action should be taken against the ice cream magnate, who died aged 73 in 1999.
An investigation by North Yorkshire Police into Jaconell i revealed l ast year that he would have faced a string of charges relating to abuse in Scarborough between 1958 and 1998 if he were still alive.
Jaconelli and his friend, disgraced Leeds-born DJ Jimmy Savile, were suspected of being involved in the abuse of 35 young victims as part of a paedophile ring operating in the resort but cheated justice.
Assistant Chief Constable Paul Kennedy said: “The submission related to an indecent assault on a Spanish man by the then 46-year-old Jaconelli, who is noted on the record as a councillor, member of the Scarborough Crime Prevention Committee and former Mayor of Scarborough. However, the record shows the former DPP’s Office ‘advised no action’ against Jaconelli on 10 October 1972.
“The i ndi c at i o n i s t hat Jaconelli was not charged with an offence in relation to this submission.”
Any victim of sexual abuse is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101.
