Saint Catherine’s longestserving nurse has retired after 29 years of helping patients and their families.

Staff nurse Hazel Edeson has spent almost three decades on the night shift because that was where she felt she could give the most to the families in her care.

“On nights, you get a little bit more time to spend with patients and that’s when they open up and talk to you more,” she said.

“When I was d o i n g my training all those years ago you were told never to get involved with patients but here it’s inevitable. I’ve met some wonderful families and of course you get close to people. You can’t help it.”

Saint Catherine’s had only just opened at its first home on Scalby Road when Hazel joined the staff.

Hazel said: “It was lovely from day one. It had such a nice atmosphere.

“The only thing that saddens me i s that we’ve been open 30 years and still people wrongly say, ‘How can you work there, it must be a horrible place to work’. It’s not, it’s wonderful.”

Meanwhile, creative caterers at Saint Catherine’s are cooking up some tasty little rascals to boost hospice funds.

Cate r i ng manager Pa m Jones and her team have come up with their own version of Yorkshire favourites fat rascals – a cross between a scone and a rock cake.

Their hospice rascals have gone down a storm and are now being offered to local cafes.

Pam said: “We’re making them to our own recipe with no added sugar. The only sugar in there is from the dried f ruit. We tried them out at the hospice and people loved them so we hope local cafes will love them, too.”

The hospice is also holding two more fundraising events – the first a Handbags and Gladrags spectacular.

It has pulled together a collection of the best evening wear, cocktail dresses and cruise wear donated to i t s shops for a fundraising day to boost hospice funds.

Debbie Jewison, area retail manager, said the event would be held from 10am to 2pm on 31 October at Westborough Methodist Church.

The day will include a short fashion show and a chance to browse the rails for fashions, shoes, handbags and jewellery.

T h e o t h e r e ve nt i s t h e Annual Ladies Lunch at the D o w n e A r ms , Wyke h a m, where Molly Coombs, who has built a successful millinery business, will be talking to the audience about her work in fashion.
