Mayor’s message of remembrance
I am honoured as the mayor of the borough of Scarborough, to be in a position to appeal to readers of The Scarborough News in asking for their support for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2015.
As we all know, this year will mark 101 years since the start of World War One and once again the Royal British Legion is encouraging everyone to support the Poppy Appeal during the official period of Remembrance from October 24 until November 11 when we reflect and remember the fallen and our currently serving military personnel.
Last year’s appeal rai s ed over £45 million and it is hoped to increase that figure this year in order to support the Armed Forces community. All money raised goes directly to its welfare work with serving service personnel, veterans and their families, so I am appealing to all members of our borough community to get involved and help raise as much as possible.

You can get a poppy from one of the many poppy volunteers in the town centres of Scarborough, Filey and Whitby in return for a donation to the Royal British Legion. Please give as much as you can afford and if you have a few hours to spare, you might also want to consid- er becoming a poppy volunteer. Anyone over 16 years of age can help, all you need to do is call 0800 085 5924.
The deputy mayor and I will be proud to join many of you at the services that have been arranged this year to reflect and remember the fallen on:
Sunday November 1, noon – laying of crosses in the Garden of Remembrance, Alma Square;
Sunday November 8, 9.30am – moving service of remembrance i nvolving the joining together and blessing of standards and wreaths, a drumhead ceremony and poppies f al l - ing during the silence period, Queen Street Methodist Hall and to follow at the RNLI with the laying of wreaths at sea;
Sunday November 8, 10.40am – annual British Legion remembrance service, Oliver’s Mount war memorial;
Wednesday November 11, 10.45am – short service of remembrance followed by two minutes silence (at 11am), Alma Square.
Finally, may I ask that as always when making your generous donations this year, that you once again remember the fallen and also those that fought and survived who all need our help to Live On.
