Halley’s words of wisdom
MATT CONNER
Just before Chris Halley flew off to the PGA Europro Tour Championships at Desert S p r i ng s S pa i n t h i s week, I caught up with him to ask what advice he had been given that has made a real difference to his game.
“The year I won the Yorkshire Amateur championship and won nearly every Yorkshire order of merit event I played in I had been given a piece of advice from a Yorkshire Team member for when I was hitting my approach shot onto a green.
“Choose green, amber and red.
“If the flag was set up i n the centre of the green this is green for go and I need to attack the flag with my shot.
“If the flag is on the left this is an amber flag position as I like to draw my shots so I can aim in the centre of the green and draw the ball into the flag.
“Finally if the flag is placed on the right of the green this is a red danger flag position so I need to play safe and aim to the centre of the green as this doesn’t suit my natural shot.
“I still use this tip now and this year I was in a six- hole pl ay- of f i n a PGA Europro event at Princes Golf Club, Kent.
“I stuck to my game plan attacking when I could and play- ing safe when I needed to.
“Unfortunately I lost out because of a three putt but I was happy with my course management.”
I have had a few readers get in touch over the past couple of weeks with their best tips.
