WI meeting

-

The October meeting of the Seamer and Irton WI was opened by president Edna Burton who welcomed our speaker for the evening Rich Maw, and also a potential new member, and of course all members.

An entry for the federation centenary album is being put together and members are asked to bring any photos taken at the various events held this year.

The group carol service will be at Ayton Methodist Church on December 10 at 7pm and the federation carol service is at 2pm on Saturday December 12 at Northallerton. A group coach will be organised if there is sufficient interest. All are welcome to both events.

Our next social coffee outing is on October 27 at 10.30am at Daisy Tearooms, Scalby, anyone wishing to go should just turn up on the morning for coffee and a good chat.

The next craft afternoon is on November 11 in the Memorial Hall from 2pm-4pm, all are welcome.

The annual dinner held at the end of January will be at the Mayfield, Seamer. The menu and list for names will be available later, husbands and partners are of course welcome. Enid Plevey gave a report about the autumn council meeting which was held at the Manor Church of England Academy near York and had been a terrific meeting. Chairman Janice Whiteford had impressed on members to keep the momentum going next year as the centenary year had been such a full and exciting one and we don’t want to feel deflated in 2016.

The guest speaker in the morning was Tricia Stewart, one of the original Calendar Girls, who was very entertaining and said that what had started out to raise enough money to buy a settee, had now raised £4 million, and was still ongoing. After lunch the speaker was Simeon Wood, a very talented musician, who talked about his life in music and not only played traditional flutes but also a penny whistle and an NHS walking stick.

Those who had attended the harvest festival auction and supper at Snainton had a lovely evening and enjoyed a delicious supper.

Rich Maw, of Infocus Photography, based in Falsgrave, then gave a wonderful talk to the members about his life in this line of work which had taken him all over the world, taking photographs of dozens of famous people. He had brought with him a selection of his work which was very impressive and the talk he gave so interesting and entertaining. After finishing the talk he then took a group photograph of all members and was given a hearty vote of thanks by Jan Braidley.

The raffle was won by Doreen Livesey, Enid Plevey, Mollie Dobson, Sue Buck and Jane Buddo. The photo competition was won by Pam Cooper.

The next meeting will be at 7.30pm on November 18 in the memorial hall, Seamer, when Bon Marche will present a fashion show. Visitors and guests are welcome. The competition is for a favourite scarf.
