The launch of the winter talks programme on Thursday October 22 was a great suc- cess. Over 30 people came to hear Mandy Sutter talk about her experience of becoming a novelist. We commenced the evening with a toast to the programme’s success over the next six months - it’ll run from October through to April on a monthly basis. Mandy was an entertaining speaker - funny, self-depreciating and philosophical about how long it took to get her first novel published and the number of re-writes it went through. Many people in the audience were curious and had lots of questions for her about her method of writing and how she markets and publicises her finished poetry, prose and journalism. She reiterated how tough it was in the current climate to get published but how enjoyable it was to meet her potential readers at talks such as this.

We are looking forward to welcoming our second speaker, Kate Fenton, who has had six novels published, produced for BBC Radio and written for various magazines and newspapers. Kate has lived in the Esk Valley near Whitby since her marriage to the late, great actor Ian Carmichael. Kate’s talk will be on Thursday November 19 from 7pm-9pm. For tickets please contact the community library on (01723) 863052 or call in during opening hours.

It’s not too late to get tickets for the Halloween party which starts at 6pm tonight (Thursday). There will be spooky crafts, stories, songs, rhymes, games and some surprises. Come dressed to kill or carve a pumpkin lantern and you could win a prize, but make sure you only use battery tealights, no candles please. The evening is suitable for children up to 12 years and their families. The cost is £2.50 per adult and £1 per child to include food and drinks.
