Local courses shine as town hosts Golf Week

Veteran Witty grabs third in Mayor’s Trophy

-

G olfers from far and wide descended on Scarborough last week for the annual Golf Week and thanks to the organiser Mick Atkinson and his legion of helpers everything went very smoothly.

The four courses North Cliff, South Cliff, Filey and Whitby were well presented and the visitors thoroughly enjoyed their golf and also the facilities provided by the towns on the Yorkshire Riviera and the matching weather.

None of the visitors enjoyed their week away as much as Richard Jones, from Rotherham, who once again won the Mayor’s Trophy for the best aggregate gross score in the Mens’ 72-hole circuit when after his four rounds he posted a total of 287.

W Griffiths of Sand Martins took the runners-up prize with an aggregate of 300 and well-known local veteran Brian Witty claimed third place with 305.

In the other major gents’ competition for the Scarborough Challenge Cup N McCall of Wath Golf Club had the best aggregate net return when he finished on 275.

He was five shots clear of D Leech, from Market Drayton, in second place with W Morris, of Shirland, a further shot back in third.

The ladies stroke play competition for the Robinson Rose Bowl was won by N Harrod with a score of net 69 and the Hesleton Cup for ladies with handicaps of 25 or above was claimed by C Rush with net 75 .

This was only after a countback as J Peace also finished on the same score in the competition.

Another winner worth a special mention was Geoff McClean of Saltburn GC, he took first place at Whitby in the stroke play competition.

The win was readily applauded by everyone as Geoff has been attending Golf Week for the last 52 years, what a record.

Local players other than Brian Witty who managed to take a prize included Craig Hewitt of North Cliff, who took first place in the stroke-play at South Cliff on the Wednesday.

Paul Dack and Nigel Middleton of South Cliff won the 4BBB at Filey on Thursday, just edging Brian Passmore and Filey’s Paul Boardman by one point.

The North Cliff and Ganton team of Dave Ellard, Dave Butterfield, Steve Pybus and an old stager made 88 points but were pipped by one point at Filey on the Sunday and had to settle for second place.

The full week’s results can be found on the Scarborough Golf Week website.

The prize presentation evening was held at North Cliff with the Mayor Simon Green and his lady Val in attendance, entertainment by The Wave contributed to a great night.
