19th century photos of Scarborough go under the hammer
A remarkable set of photographs shot in Scarborough at the end of the 19th century are up at auction after being found during a loft clearance.
The photographs expose the vast gulf between the “posh and the poor” in late Victorian England.
The photographs will be appear in Dee Atkinson and Harrison’s collector’s auction, Driffield, on Friday September 30.
Photographed by William Nowell, themagiclanternslides are thought to have lain unseen for more than a century before they were found.
“It is the extraordinary contrast in this set of thirty odd photographs that is so unusual,” said Graham Paddison of auctioneers Dee Atkinson and Harrison. “It just slaps you in the face.”
“William Nowell was the manager of the Great Northern Steamship Fishing Company and a keen photographer. He shot the images on a visit to Scarborough at some point between 1895 and 1902.”
